Instructions On Your PowerPoint Presentations

The two semester projects on a documentary film or contemporary movie should focus on psychosocial issues that are raised by the films you have designated to report on during the semester.  It should be noted that Dr. Pankey can make suggestions for your semester assignments if you cannot find suitable topics at the beginning of the semester. You will have one month to ready yourself and complete your responsibility/assignments when the written (PowerPoint presentation) documents are to be turned in at this "ASSIGNMENTS" site on CANVAS prior to the designated deadlines (See Due Dates Above). Your PPTX Presentation serves as a Semester Paper chosen by you during the semester. You will be required to do two projects, one on a documentary with a sport psychology or sport sociology angle (due at mid-term), and one project of a contemporary sport movie (due at the end of the semester).

When reporting on a psychosocial movie, any narrative documentary or contemporary sport movie has many issues regarding social relationships and social structure. Almost all sport movies, documentaries, or biographies for example, deal with interpersonal relationships, and most will have some message to convey about those relationships. If you choose a Sport Biography or Documentary or movie that focuses on the politics of sport for your first project - in that case, you might use the controversial side of the issues as a theme. Again, almost all movies should deal with one or more social structural issues of social location (race, class, gender, religion, politics, occupational conditions, money, power, status hierarchy, inequality, or social norms).  Some deal with psychological issues, such as anxiety, stress, motivation, drive, willingness to give-up or win. In some of the movie options, race is involved (one of the players is white, the other is black), as are power (the owners), occupational conditions (what are one's rights in the workplace?), and, obviously, money (if we let them continue to play, will people come? If we don't, will we lose the pennant?).

Your projects are to develop two presentations, in PPTX format, that must submit to Dr. Pankey via CANVAS ASSIGNMENTS link. One project is to develop a presentation on a movie having a sport biography or documentary theme. The other is a to develop a presentation on a contemporary sport movie having some form of psychosocial significance that you can draw on.

Each PPT presentation will be evaluated on five criteria:

  1. Introduction.
  2. Psychosocial pertinence of the book, documentary or contemporary movie.
  3. Technical skills utilized in the presentation documents. e.g.: graphics, illustrations, embedded movies, etc.
  4. Clarity. e.g.: did you clearly convey your thoughts concerning the psychosocial elements of the book, movie or biography.
  5. Conclusion. e.g. qualitative understanding on your project.
  6. Reference Page Included.

Slide Presentations Should be formatted (PPTX format only) and submitted to Dr. Pankey by due date on your CANVAS ASSIGNMENTS site. You should include your name on the title of your PowerPoint when you drop in into ASSIGNMENTS.

The form of this presentation handed in to Dr. Pankey on CANVAS must be in PowerPoint format (PPTX). Address: What is the major focus or plot? Who are the main characters? What is the arc of the action ‚beginning, middle, and end, what are the sociological issues raised by the film. Other points within your slides may include if a point of view is being presented on this issue, what is it? If it is not clear, speculate. Whether the book/film overtly takes a point of view on the social issue, what thoughts were raised in your mind as a result of this incident? A final slide in which you analyze the issues that are raised in relationship to sport. Why is this an important issue to think about in connection with sport? How does this issue demonstrate how sport is a microcosm of society? If there is a particular problem (e.g., as in an example, discrimination against gay athletes in sports), how would you go about solving it?

If you have any questions about this project, be sure to contact Dr. Pankey by email.
