Origin = Tranverse processes of upper vertebrae

Insertion = Occipital bone and spinous process of upper vertebrae

Action =

One side - Lateral flexion of the cervical and thoracic spine

Both Sides - Extension and hyperextension of atlantooccipital joint and thoracic spine.
